Pelion is the beautiful, majestic mountain that is located at the peninsula of Magnesia and according to mythology it was there that Clash of the Titans took place.

During the fight the Sporades Islands, the scattered little islands of the Aegean Sea situated east of Magnesia were created, from the huge rocks the Titans hurled at each other.It is said that the beautiful mountain of Pelion was also the summer residence of the gods and home of the Centaurs, the mythological beings with a body half human and half horse that were born from the poetic union of Ixion and Nefeli.

The most famous of all the centaurs was the wise Chiron, son of Kronos and teacher of many mythical heroes. He taught the first doctor of men, Asclepius the craft of medicine and his near the apprentices include all the leaders of the Trojan War, and great heroes such as Hercules, Achilles and Jason.

Pelion was the place where the wedding of Peleus and Thetis took place, according to the songs of Homer and Pindar. During this wedding Paris gave the beautiful Helen the Apple of Contention that became the cause of the Trojan War. It was also where Jason organized the Argonaut expedition, aiming to bring back from Colchis the Golden Fleece aboard the famous ship “Argo” constructed by ancient trees of Pelion.

The Pelion peninsula is a four season destination, very popular among locals as well as foreigner visitors. It is a place of extraordinary natural beauty, having a mountain covered with forests of tall beeches, towering oaks, sycamores, pines and firs perfectly combined with amazing sea landscape. All around the peninsula at the feet of the mountain are lying beautiful beaches wetted by the Aegean or Pagasitikos gulf.

In Pelion you will find beautiful picturesque villages, built according to the folk characteristic architecture of Pelion, that harmonize totally with the natural environment, amphitheatrically built on imposing slopes or hidden in the lush vegetation. The largest village of Pelion is Zagora, which is built in a magnificent location surrounded by forests and streams that create landscapes of infinite beauty. It is also worth mentioning the scheduled settlement Vyzitsa and Makrinitsa that is known as the “balcony” of Pelion, because of the panoramic view of Volos and Pagasitikos from the square of the village.

Volos is a large urban center at a short distance from the beautiful beaches and hillsides of Pelion. It provides access to all the modern goods and services, a port, the third largest port in Greece that connects the city with the stunning islands of the Sporades, and an airport in Neos Anchialos that is the major transportation hub of Central Greece and offers a wide variety of both national and international destinations.

Winter and Summer Activities

During the winter, the ski center on Mount Pelion provides 5 tracks of the total length of 15 km, in order to accommodate at its well-organized facilities the lovers of winter sports. It has a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and Pagasitikos gulf that you can admire while you enjoy skiing and other activities such as snowboarding, mountain artillery ski and of course… snowball fight!

Pelion is also famous for its clean beaches where you can indulge yourself in completely different activities such as diving, underwater explorations, swimming and water sports like water ski, parachuting, wind surfing, sailing or Jet Ski. The area is also offered for unforgettable cruises to Pagasitikos and Sporades Islands. Finally, Pelion is ideal for alternative tourism, providing a great environment for hiking and horse riding, climbing and mountaineering.

Museums and attractions

Volos Train Station: The station of Evaristo De Chirico has remained unchanged since 1882, having a simple architecture, and gabled roof outlined with wooden decorations. The second floor of the graphic station accommodates a museum with rare exhibits from the history of railways in the region. What also stands out is the statue of Athena, made of white marble and carved with excellent detail by the Italian sculptor G. Previsan in 1884.

Prehistoric settlement of Sesklo: In Sesklo the archaeologists unearthed the ruins of the oldest organized settlement in Europe. Walls, houses, tombs and many artifacts date back to the seventh millennium BC. In Dimini are also found the remains of another smaller settlement which dates back to the Neolithic period and ancient Iolkos has been discovered in the same area as well.

In Pelion you can also take a ride on the graphic train of Pelion across verdant hills and bridges, visit the Museum of the painter Theofilos as well as the Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos, take a walk and enjoy your coffee or drink in the port of the city, admire churches of exquisite beauty and the castle of Volos.
